Biography
Jan Bertram supports innovative companies—from incubating start-ups to listed corporations, as well as established industrial SMEs and mid-sized companies—in protecting and leveraging their intangible assets in France and internationally. He guides his clients through patent filings and represents them in opposition proceedings before the EPO and national offices.
Building on the experience gained since joining Santarelli in 2019, after an initial position in another Paris IP firm, he works across all technical fields, with a particularly strong practice in the transport sectors (automotive, aerospace, rail), robotics, household appliances, and optics. A graduate engineer in mechanical engineering from the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) and a fluent German speaker, Jan also holds the CEIPI diploma (patents specialization). As a French Patent Attorney and European Patent Attorney, he is authorized to represent clients before the French and European patent offices, as well as before the Unified Patent Court (UPC).
His support encompasses a comprehensive approach: preventive, through in-depth audits of his clients’ needs and commercial and legal challenges; strategic, by building and managing a patent portfolio aligned with the company’s objectives; and operational, by ensuring close and regular follow-up with R&D teams and inventors on the one hand, and foreign counsel on the other. Outside his professional activity, Jan enjoys exploring new horizons, whether sailing on the water, cycling, or hiking on land.
